    Money Crashers

Tags, bundles and haggling

  • Tag every item

Put a price on each piece so shoppers don't have to ask. Same-price items can share one sign, like “All books $1”.

    Redfin

  • Leave room to haggle

Price 15–20% above the least you'd accept. Write “firm” on the few things you won't discount.

    Money Crashers

  • Bundle the small stuff

“3 for $5” or “six books for $5” moves volume and makes buying more feel like a deal.

    Redfin

  • Check what sales near you charge

Prices vary by region. Stop by a couple of local sales or thrift stores before you tag.

    Money Crashers

  • Hold back the valuable pieces

Something worth a lot usually fetches more online than at a yard sale, where shoppers expect rock-bottom prices.

    Money Crashers

  • Mark down when it slows

Lower the tags themselves when traffic drops, and use the last hour for deeper cuts such as 50% off or buy 3, get 1 free.

    Redfin

  • Add a free box

Small things that won't bring much can go in a box marked FREE — the word alone stops people walking by.

Prices are general guidance, not appraisals. The calculator ranges combine the two guides: new in packaging ⅓–½, good ¼–⅓, worn 10%–¼ (the low end of the 10–30% range).
